Mozambican musician and ethnomusicologist Moreira Chonguiça will be honoured by the School of Communication and Arts at Eduardo Mondlane University in recognition of his contribution to Mozambique’s cultural identity and his role in sharing the country’s rich heritage with the world through jazz.
The ceremony will take place on Friday, 18 September 2026, at the School of Communication and Arts in Maputo. It will be attended by the Rector of Eduardo Mondlane University, Professor Manuel Guilherme Júnior, together with members of the university’s leadership and academic staff, representatives of the diplomatic corps, artists and partners of the Moreira Chonguiça brand.
As part of the programme, Moreira will deliver a lecture entitled “Cultural Diplomacy as a Driver of Social Transformation.” The presentation will explore how music, culture and creative exchange can strengthen national identity, build bridges between communities and nations, and contribute meaningfully to social development.
The recognition reflects Moreira’s longstanding commitment to promoting Mozambican music and culture on international stages. Throughout his career, he has used jazz not only as a form of artistic expression, but also as a powerful instrument for cultural dialogue, education and diplomacy.
Moreira expressed his gratitude to the School of Communication and Arts and Eduardo Mondlane University for this meaningful recognition.
“To be honoured by one of Mozambique’s leading academic institutions is deeply humbling. This recognition strengthens my commitment to using music and cultural diplomacy to celebrate our identity, connect people and help inspire positive transformation.”
